Luis Enrique changing the deep rooted Spain’s tactical philosophy

Spain’s National team coach has been subjected to regular criticism by the football pundits for his team selection. Spain have always been a team that opponent wants to avoid playing. After reaching pinnacle of success by winning both the world cup and Euro’s in the span of 2 years Spain’s performance has been in downfall. Much to the expectation Spain’s performance was not up to the par considering they won the title in the previous edition. Spain’s performance since then has been in downward trend leading to major overhaul. Vicente del Bosque, the man made Spain reach pinnacle of success by winning Euro’s and World cup was sacked owing to team’s poor run of form. After that Julene Lopetegui and Fernando Hierro were appointed as Spain’s national team coach. Both the coaches failed to exceed the performance they were appointed for leading to their sacking.

Luis Enrique, former Barcelona coach was appointed as the next Spain’s National team coach. Luis Enrique won the treble with Barcelona in his season since his appointment. The idea behind Luis Enrique’s hiring was to get back to achieving success in short term. Luis Enrique stepped down as Spain’s National team coach citing family reason’s behind his decision. He again then was reappointed as Spain’s national team head coach.

Selection based on Performance not on his past achievement

Luis Enrique changed the hoodoo of selecting players based on past achievement. He started selecting players based on his recent performances for their league clubs. Spain’s national team who won the Euro and World cup were dominated by players from Barcelona and Real Madrid. But after poor run of performances in the following years coaches stuck to the selection of Big club players. Even though the players who were from smaller clubs or different clubs were not given nod ahead of Big club players. Enrique since his return to National team shattered this long lasting hoodoo. He went to select players who were performing well irrespective of them being in other leagues or smaller clubs. Luis Enrique was not afraid of leaving out the players who were not up to the marks in their performance. This tactical change led to the success of La Roja in the European tournament.

La Roja thrashed Germany by putting 6 goals behind to book a spot in UNL final tournament. Scoring 6 goals against Germany with Neuer in goal has to be one hell of achievement by Luis Enrique’s side.
