Valverde has hit the ground running at the Nou Camp after replacing Luis Enrique in the summer.
Barcelona have won their first three La Liga matches of the season and thrashed italian giants juventus earlier this week.
Messi has played a key role in their success, netting eight goals in six matches.
And Spanish outlet MARCA, claim a tactical tweak from Valverde has aided the Argentine’s goalscoring record.
When assessing Barcelona’s good form, the publication wrote: “Valverde has insisted that Messi shouldn’t drop back to get the ball and start an attack, placing him in a more unrestrained role which resulted to eight goals in his first six official matches.”
Valverde loves having Messi on his side after years of suffering at the hands of the Barca legend.
“I have the feeling that whenever Leo picks the ball up something is going to happen, anything can happen, and it’s always good for us,” the Nou Camp chief said.
“Leo scored an extraordinary goal and blew the game open. He is one of the best players in the history of the game.
“I’ve had to suffer a lot against him in the past but now I’m lucky enough to be able to enjoy him,” added Valverde, who came from Athletic Bilbao and has managed several Spanish clubs.
Barcelona are next in action on Saturday when they travel to Getafe.
