Barca were desperate to replace Neymar following the winger’s world-record £200m move to Paris St-Germain.
The La Liga giants landed Borussia Dortmund star Ousmane Dembele for around £100m but Ernesto Valverde was still in the hunt for other players.
Liverpool talisman Philippe Coutinho and PSG ace Di Maria were on Barca’s wish list but deals didn’t materialise.
And according to Spanish transfer outlet Don balon, Ronaldo stopped Di Maria joining Barca.
They say the Portugal international still has a good relationship with the former Real Madrid star.
And Ronaldo told Di Maria to snub Barca, with the Real talisman fearing the Argentina playmaker would be a great signing for their rivals.
Reports this week claimed Barca made a deadline day move for Di Maria after giving up on Coutinho.
The Spanish side had three bids rejected for the Liverpool ace, with Jurgen Klopp refusing to sell his star man.
And after admitting defeat in the Coutinho race, Barca turned their attention to Di Maria.
However, PSG slapped a £55m (€60m) price tag on the former Manchester United winger.
